CARNATIC BASICS - 3

science and art

in the entire world, out of so many music cultures, only carnatic music has the special usage of gamakas. that i will explain later. in that way hindustani is comparable to western or any other music system which play the notes in plain fashion.

of course, it is there in all music systems with other names, like 'grace notes' in western and in hindustani also, certain gharanas have this gamaka system. it is used occasionally.

but there is no carnatic music without this gamakam. it is the relation between 2 adjacent notes or swaras and the 27 microtones used in carnatic music is the most advanced system of music.

so let's come to carnatic music.

there have been certain raagas like mohanam, kambodhi , bhairavi et al which were there since time immemorial. devaram and thiruvasagam shud be sung in these ragas only in the temples. they are called pann. this was when music was sheer art. then when intellect overtook the mind, then the system of 72 melakarta ragas emerged.

it is just like the periodic table of elements. gold, silver and iron were long known. but lesser known halogens and other elements were all first listed in the table and then found out.

how? because the table is based on atomic structure. increasing the proton count, elements were listed long before they were discovered.

similarly, when music was extended as a science from art, the intellect listed the so far missing ragas.

sri venkatamakhin was the one who propounded the melakarta system of raga classification.

CARNATIC BASICS - 2

evolution

music is there since time immemorial. people used to express their feelings thru music in all parts of the world. in india music is considered to be divine. saraswathi carries a veena, narada carries a veena, nandhi plays mridanga and these have references in the vedhas itself. and all these instruments are used in carnatic music only. not in any other music.

what i mean to say is 'what is called as carnatic music today was the first system of music in the world'. in entire india there was only one music system. later after so many invasions in the north, the music also had a tremendous change in that part of the country and a new genre evolved which we now call as hindustani music. actually carnatic music is pure hindustani. hindustani music is videshi.

you could have noticed that carnatic music has only bhakthi compositions. here music was never separated from divinity. all the trinity's compositions are on divine forms only. we never separated music and divinity. so there was no change in its usage.

(there are compositions other than bhakthi. u can find it in the following posts)

CARNATIC BASICS - 1

THIS IS A SERIES I WROTE SOMETIME BACK, IN ORKUT ILAYARAJA COMMUNITY, UNDER THE TITLE 'CARNATIC BASICS FOR IR FANS'.

IN CERTAIN PLACES, I HAVE QUOTED PROFESSOR SHRI. P.SAMBAMURTHI IN HIS OWN WORDS. HIS EXPLANATION WAS SO SIMPLE AND PERFECT THAT I COULD NOT CHANGE EVEN A SINGLE WORD.

I ALSO GIVE THE CONVERSATIONS WHICH MADE THE SERIES INTERESTING. I HAVE MADE SOME CORRECTIONS FOR GOOD.

FEEL FREE TO COMMENT.

carnatic basics for ir fans

hi, in this thread i will provide some basic inputs about carnatic music.

introduction

i would try to be as simple as possible. please post ur responses.

carnatic music actually means south indian music. 'carnatic' came from karnataka as it is the first southern region from north. also people say it was named after purandaradasa who came from karnataka. it has a reason. purandaradasa only gave the now existing format of music lessons namely sarali varisai, janta varisai, dhaatu varisai, alankaram, swarajathi, geetham, varnam, keertanai etc. he lived from 1494-1564 ad.

he personally chose the mayamalava gowla raagam in which all the initial lessons upto alankaram were composed. there is a reason for that also which i will tell later.

(there is also another theory, which does not have much takers in carnatic arena. கரை மண்டலம் became coramandal in english. similarly கரைநாடு was the name for coastal belt of cuddalore, nagai, thanjavur etc. the music from this area, கரைநாட்டுச் சங்கீதம் later became carnatic music. even other than carnatic arena, this theory is not that popular.)

naan thedum sevvandhi poovidhu - remix by djo

my friend djo has done a remix on naan thedum. since raja's works are mathematically perfect, yeah music is aesthetic maths, it can be adapted to any genre.
there r so many examples. the new generation is attracted towards the sound and rhythm section only. that can be done by any good sound engineer with a good hold on technology. my friend has done the same.
but a song or any music as such, transcends time, only when its soul, the melody portion is heart touching. it has been the case in the past, it will be the case forever.
technology is available to everyone. but only some stand out. why is that? they know that technology alone can not withstand time. only gud music can do that. and they bring it in their works.
