chakravagam aka ahir bhairavi

ahir bhairavi

this is the hindustani equivalent of chakravagam. the bhava is the same. maybe minor deviations are there. hindustani, western-naale u can not expect purity of the scale. so, the mood is more important and the following two songs are typical of that.

i wud like to quote 2 beautiful songs in this raga.

'ullathil nalla ullam' from karnan and 'kaa karoon sajani' from the hindi movie swami.

the first one needs no introduction, the 'venkala kural' of sirgazhi govindarajan, extraordinary tune of msv, grandeur of b r panthulu , unparallelled histrionics by n.t.ramarao and sivaji and the incomparable situation duly incorporated in the lyrics by the great kannadasan.

karna lies on the death bed with arjuna's arrows on his chest. but the punya karma that he has done saves him from further annihilation from arjuna. krishna knew this, as he is of everything, connives , as usual, to beg as 'yachakam' of his punya karma, so that arjuna can finish his task.

krishna, attired as a poor brahmana, comes before karna and asks him of the above favor, which karna gives with great satisfaction and arjuna kills karna. this song comes just before krishna's yachakam.

this is where the creator takes charge. msv might not have thought abt this raga when composing. but when the situation with so much intensity hits a good creator, the effect exactly it had on him, is clearly evident from the tune in this raga. the gloom, the war front, the deathbed, the smell of blood, the loss of near and dear ones, the picture of kurukshetra, the finality of death, the helplessness of arjuna, the greatness of karna, the all knowing lord incarnate , everything , every single thing of the above can be found in this song.

right from the shehnai prelude, to the sarangi in the interlude wow!! all great elements of a great song.
mahabharatha and ramayana can give u so many so many great gems of thoughts for our day to day life.

ahir bhairavi contd...

the bruga when sirgazhi sings 'karna.......' everytime is the epitome of mastery in voice control. the thorough understanding of the situation and that he is singing for the lord incarnate is beautifully expressed by him in the rendition.

coming to the lyrics,

ullathil nalla ullam urangadhu enpadhu vallavan vaguthadhada, karna ,varuvadhai edhir kollada

thaiku nee magan illai, thambiku nee annan illai, oor pazhi yaetrayada, naanum un pazhi kondaenada. what a great plight of karna!! he knows abt all his relatives, but he can not claim anyone to be his own. not arjuna, arjuna knows only after karna's death. even before knowing that karna was his elder brother, arjuna was confused abt fighting his own kith and kin.

i used to listen to pulavar keeran's discourses even as a small boy. he used to assert that 'gita' was advised to arjuna, but karna only followed it. yes, each and every aspect of gita was lived by karna.

mannavar pani yaerkum kannan un pani seiya un adi panivaanada, karna mannithu arulvaayada

senjotru kadan theerka saeradha idam saerndhu vanjathil vizhundhayada, karna vanjagan kannanada.

all the ithihasic characters with 'karna' in their name has fought for 'sejotru kadan'. vikarnan, kumba karnan, karnan, some i remember. they know they are fighting for the wrong side, but to show their loyalty and to honour the non repayable debt of senjotru kadan (giving livelihood).

even for hopeless situations, kannadasan writes beautiful lyrics. given this type of a situation, we need not say abt his gr8 work in this song. poondhu vilayadi irukan manushan.

coming to the situation,

krishna asks for the punya karma of karna. he obliges happily, and how! pulavar keeran beautifully describes this place. there is a grammatical usage called 'vinai thogai' in thamizh grammar. 'vinai sol' means verb. 'thogai' means that which is hidden. when the tense(past, present, future)of the verb is hidden in the word, then it is called 'vinai thogai'. like 'ooru kai'.

'ooru kai' is vinai thogai bcoz it is common to all the three tenses, ooriya kai, oorum kai , oora pogum kai'.

similarly 'veesu thenral'. veesiya thenral, veesuginra thenral, veesa pogum thenral.

in our culture, to give something to others is called 'dhaarai vaarthal'. that is we use water(dharai) to purify what we give in offering. karna uses his blood as water, to give all his punya karma to krishna.

here, in villi bharatham, the word 'sei punniyam' is used. seitha punniyam, which he has already done, seiginra punniyam, the one he is doing right now by giving the lord his punya karma, seiya pogum punniyam, the one that will accrue on account of his current alms.

i never had any doubt abt. vinai thogai in my lifetime again.

he gives all the three punya palam to krishna. what a great character? and some ignorant people say, this is a drama written by vyasa. can anyone depict such intricate characteristics of a person and so many so with just imagination. i leave it to you.

coming to the histrionics,

some people know why they have come to this world. even though they are actors! NTR came to this world to let us know, how lord krishna wud have looked like. that gait, that all knowing smile, that occasional frown, that dialogue delivery, that sarcasm, that unfathomable face, that divine aura, they way he carried himself as the lord, wow!!! he knew why came to this world. can you imagine anyone better than N.T.RAMA RAO to portray krishna?

i have seen lot of other krishnas. in the serials, other movies. but ntr is ntr. particularly in karnan and maya bazaar.

and our karnan, the great sivaji ganesan. he also probably knew why he came to this world. to show us how some characters like veera pandia katta bomman, voc, karnan et al wud have looked like. the acting capabilities of sivaji need not be explained, as it is a world known fact. but just recollect this scene when he narrates to kunti about his friend, duryodana.

just see sivaji's face when he narrates an incident involving himself (karna) and duryodana's wife. such subtle emotions and innumerable of them can be expressed by sivaji alone in this world, i bet. such a thorough grasp of the character he is portraying.

coming to the grandeur,
crores of rupees are spent these days to bring the desired effect. failing which, graphics aka animatronics are used. just watch this movie.

b.r.panthulu matched apn in each department in karnan. he produced and directed this movie which was released in 1963.

coming to the next song, most of the younger generation wud not have either heard or seen this movie. so, instead of writing abt this song , i will let u hear it and decide it yourself. hear it in a mildly lit room, jus before goint to sleep. and let me know the effect it had on you.

movie name 'swami'. girish karnad, shabana azmi in the lead. released in 1977.
the 'music' is by rajesh roshan. of course the original 'aaye na baalam' by ustad bade ghulam ali khan is a legend. sung by kjy
